Pale colour is a pigment problem

A hard, filler-heavy blend leaves wax on the paper without much pigment in it.

Pressing harder does not fix it; it just breaks the crayon.

Snapping is a hardness problem

The same hardness that makes it pale makes it brittle.

Softer, better-loaded blends flex slightly instead of shearing.

Diameter is the other half

A fist grip applies force through a short lever, which standard barrels lose to.

Stated laydown, stated break resistance, and the barrel matched to the age.
